Studio work - Painting on canvas

Mother & daughter (40” x 18” acrylic on canvas)

During the tumultuous period of lockdown, I found solace and healing through the act of painting, channeling my emotions and experiences onto the canvas. This particular artwork encapsulates the evolving relationship I was cultivating with my mother during this time of isolation and reflection.

In this painting, I chose to incorporate chrysanthemums as the central motif. Traditionally, in Chinese culture, chrysanthemums symbolize death and mourning. However, in my interpretation, I have imbued them with a different significance. Rather than representing the end, I see chrysanthemums as protectors against negative energies and as symbols of renewal and vitality.

Freedom (acrylic on canvas)

For me this painting represents freedom. Utilising a fluorescent underpainting and exclusively employing a palette knife for the painting process, I aimed to capture a sense of dynamic energy and spontaneity. These experimental techniques not only allowed for a unique aesthetic but also reflected the freedom of expression inherent in the artistic process.

The subject represents a story. Rather than a whip, a flower symbolising a departure from oppressive structures and the embrace of autonomy. Through this imagery, I seek to challenge the viewer to embrace the idea of defining one's own path.

POP! (acrylic on canvas)

Poppies are one of my favourite flowers. Fun fact - if you burn the stems of a bud, it will help it pop quicker. Trust me, its very satisfying.
